Virginia Sports & Entertainment Law Journal

Home

In Fall 1998, the Virginia Sports Law Journal received its approval to become an official University of Virginia School of Law publication. Shortly thereafter, in Summer 1999, the first issue was published of what would become a biannual publication. Spring 2000 saw the journal expand to what it is today, the Virginia Sports and Entertainment Law Journal, encompassing issues in the entertainment field.

Now is an interesting time in the sports and entertainment industries. Novel legal issues are being raised and debated each day in courtrooms, conference rooms, and chat rooms. As the first sports and entertainment law journal at a Top 10 law school, VaSE strives to be at the forefront of academic scholarship in these areas, and recent editions have addressed many emerging issues. HBO’s Costas Now and ESPN the Magazine have both referenced VaSE articles. Recent articles have addressed such topics as video game licensing, basketball arena and team owners’ tort liability for spectator injuries, negotiations over cell phone ringtone revenue, and the impact of developing instant replay technology and policies.

Since its inception, VaSE has been an entirely student run publication. Current UVa students may join VaSE through the annual unified journal tryout process. VaSE welcomes members that are passionate about the subject matter and will contribute to VaSE’s continued excellence.
